Crunchy Cleaning - Toilets

I have tried to get my toilets sparkly without the use of chemicals like CLR or bleach. The amount of vinegar and baking soda and elbow grease that has been used in my futile attempts astonishes me. Soap nuts worked well, but I've had a hard time keeping up with boiling them down, making the cleaner and then using it regularly.

The worst part, at the bottom of the toilets there are those yucky hard water stains. You know, that brown bit of stubborn stain that slowly builds where the water whooshes down. So I can't even pretend the toilets look clean when that mark stares up at me, taunting me with its staying power.

Thanks to the internet, I have found the solution: Kool-Aid.

Dump in a few Kool-Aid crystals. Let sit overnight. Scrub a wee bit. Hello clean toilet! (Well ok, it did take two cleaning sessions to rid myself of the brown water stains. I can live with that.)

Apparently it's the citric acid in the Kool-Aid. There are probably lots of things that will work: lime juice, lemon juice (that's what I added to my excellent soap nut cleaner), and a variety of other products. But I'm sold on the Kool-Aid.

And as the Kool-Aid ads so proudly stated: "Just pennies a glass" - or bowl in my case.

  1. That is really interesting! I'm so trying this trick. Who would have thought? Did it make your water purty? lol

  3. When my husband first saw the water he was a little freaked out before I told him it was just kool-aid. The smell though is quite wonderful!
