I decided last night that my favourite sport is U5 soccer. These are the kids that turn 5 this calendar year. They play 3-on-3 with no goalie.
They are old enough to get the basics of the game -- kick the ball into a net -- but not quite old enough to always know which net, or quite how to do it.
The game doesn't have positions. The six kids on the field usually just chase after the ball. Sometimes there's a pass or two. Sometimes that pass is even to a team mate.
Most of the kids run hard, but on occasion a kid will dance, sing or totally zone out and look at the clouds, the dandelions, or the kids on the next field. And it's all fun. Everyone plays and everyone is cheered on. In a couple of years this magic will be gone as the kids begin to understand the game, play positions, and realize what is truly expected of them.
But for now, I'm going to enjoy the U5 season and cherish the kiss Eamon blew my way as he ran off the field after his first shift.
I love U5 soccer.
